Eastern Cape Legislature conducts National Council of Provinces oversight visit , 13 to 16 Sept

The Eastern Cape delegates to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) met with the Speaker of the Legislature, Ms Noxolo Kiviet, Acting Premier, Ms Thandiswa Marawu, MECs of Health, and Education, MPLs and the Auditor-General at the Legislature today.

The purpose of the meeting was to receive briefings on the commitments made in the delivery of education and health services in the Province, ahead of their oversight visits in the Alfred Nzo District Municipality.

This is part of the NCOP’s Provincial Week, which started today until Friday, 16 September 2016, under the theme: "Following up on our commitments to make access to education and health care work for all". Provincial Week provides an opportunity for the NCOP and Legislatures, to engage directly with the citizens on challenges they experience.

It further provides an opportunity to receive reports from Government departments and municipalities on progress made regarding service delivery.

In her report to NCOP delegates, the Acting Premier highlighted some of the critical issues regarding the commitment of government in improving the lives of the people of the Eastern Cape. She also talked on key priority areas for the Province to address socio-economic challenges which includes Education Transformation, Agricultural development and SMME development.

The delegation also heard that in 2015/16 mobile clinics were activated for deep rural areas in the Province to enhance coverage. It was also reported that in terms of the Audit Report, the department of Health obtained an Unqualified Audit Opinion while Education got a Qualified Audit Opinion with reduced matters of emphasis.

The delegation will from tomorrow visit hospitals and schools in Mount Frere, Mount Ayliff, Maluti, Lusikisiki and Mbizana amongs others as part of the programme. A debriefing session to report back on issues emanating from the Provincial Week will be held at the Legislature on Friday. A full programme for the Provincial Week is attached.
