National Student Financial Aid Scheme meets with Sector Education and Training Authorities on student funding, 18 Feb

NSFAS strengthens ties with SETAs on student funding

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will hold a meeting with the chief executive officers and administrators of all the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) to discuss and commit bursary funds towards NSFAS qualifying students at institutions of Higher Education Training Institutions.

The meeting forms part of government’s resolve to channel various sources of funding through NSFAS to increase access to higher education and training, as announced by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blaze Nzimande.
 
Amongst others, issues related to administration of funds; learner/student selection processes and enrolment for critical and scars skills or academic and/or technical learning courses in line with the Human Resource Development Strategy of South Africa will be on the agenda. The role played by the financial aid offices of universities remains one of the critical as they identify and conduct eligibility testing of bursary-qualifying students against an established eligibility criteria and the NSFAS Means Test.

Currently, SETAs contribute a total of R365 million towards bursaries warded through NSFAS and are integral part of the 25 funds or partners that makes NSFAS a sustainable entity.
