National Assembly Speaker, Ms Baleka Mbete, visited the injured Member of the Pan African Parliament (PAP), Ms Aissatou Sowe Diawara, who is in hospital following an attack in Johannesburg last week.

Ms Mbete reassured Ms Diawara of the South African government’s commitment to arresting those involved in the attack on 28 July. Ms Diawara, of Senegal, is recuperating in hospital after she suffered serious injuries.

Three other Members of PAP who were with her in the car during the attack were unharmed while their belongings, including travel documents, were taken. They were on their way to a Sandton hotel from the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

The safety and security of all Members of the PAP remain of paramount importance to South Africa and its Parliament. The South African Police will continue to investigate this criminal act.

The political leadership and the administration of the South African Parliament remain seized with the safety of Members of the PAP as the host country by facilitating engagement with the relevant departments.

The South African representative in the Pan African Parliament, Dr Hunadi Mateme, the Secretary to Parliament, Mr Gengezi Mgidlana, and his Deputy Secretary for Support Services, Ms Baby Tyawa, have at various days of the week also paid visits to Ms Diawara.

Parliament will continue to give her the necessary support during her stay in the country.

Ms Diawara arrived in South Africa to attend the PAP Plenary held in Midrand from 29 July to 5 August.
