Parliament condemns municipalities for not developing sport infrastructure

Municipalities not interested in sport infrastructure development says Sport Committee

The Portfolio Committee on Sport and Recreation has noticed that municipalities in the Free State province have no interest in spending the grant for developing sport infrastructure.

During its week-long oversight visit to the Free State, the Committee noticed a trend of municipalities not spending the p-Component of the 15% Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) funds. The Committee has realised that municipalities divert the MIG funds to other projects that are covered by other grants.

The Committee has also noted the serious neglect of the challenges regarding armature and professional boxing. In this regard, the Committee has decided to engage South African National Armature Boxing Organisation (SANABO) and Boxing South Africa (BSA) to urgently pay close attention to the issues that boxers and promoters are faced with in the province.

The Committee wishes to commend the Free State provincial sport and recreation department for allocating budget from their voted funds to build sport infrastructure in municipalities. The Committee saw evidence of this when it conducted an oversight visit to Fezile Dabi Stadium and Master Nakedi Indoor Sport Centre in Tumahule, Parys.

Committee Chairperson, Ms. Beauty Dlulane has expressed her appreciation of the sport facilities being built where people are able to access them. The Committee also wished to commend the provincial department for the good work being done in sport-focused schools, National Training Centre that is situated in Bloemfontein and the support the department gives to sports development programmes in the province.
