Minister Dipuo Peters on Kriel road crash in Mpumalanga

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) together with the South African Police Services (SAPS), finalised a preliminary report into the cause of the major crash that took place on Friday, 2 September 2016 at approximately 07h30 on the R547 Kinross to Kriel Road, Kinsross Mpumalanga. The multiple vehicles crash, involved an articulated truck, LDV, two (2) Sedans and a TLB.

It is alleged that a Kia Picanto attempted to overtake a number of vehicles over a solid barrier line and entered the travelling lane unsafe and an Articulated Truck crashed into it and three other vehicles were also involved. The Kia and Truck burned and the driver of the Kia was killed as well as a passenger in an involved LDV, one (1) person was seriously injured and four (4) other persons sustained slight injuries.

The main cause of the crash was overtaking illegally on a solid barrier line. “I have directed law enforcement officers to be on high alert, to be visible, and to patrol all known hazardous areas. On the Kriel road, where this crash took place, we will prioritise overtaking at no overtaking zones and our law enforcement officers will show no mercy to traffic law violators,” said Minister Peters.

The Minister remains concerned that weekends continue unabated to pose a major challenge as demonstrated by carnages on our roads with most crashes occurring on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Human factor contributes the most to these crashes, with many collisions occurring as a result of jay-walking, speeding, overtaking in the face of oncoming traffic, hit and run and driving under the influence of alcohol.

“I have further directed the RTMC to speedily conclude the investigations and the Road Accident Fund (RAF) to give the families of the deceased the necessary comfort during this difficult time,” Minister Peters added. Minister Peters passes her heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and wishes those in hospital a speedy recovery.
