Road Traffic Management on road safety

More than 5 000 vehicles were discontinued this festive period after they were found to have defects that make them unsafe to operate.

The National Traffic Police (NTP), provincial and municipal traffic authorities have been conducting roadside checks to identify un-roadworthy vehicles in an effort to reduce the number of crashes.

Public transport operators who intend transporting commuters to the metropolitan areas are advised to ensure that their vehicles have proper documentation.

More than 3 000 vehicles were impounded from December to date after they were found transporting passengers without proper permits. They had to pay heavy penalties of between R2 000 and R5 000 to have their vehicles released from the pounds.

Of serious concern is the inconvenience caused to passengers when vehicles are impounded and there are delays on the journeys as a result.

More than 450 000 traffic fines were issued to motorists for violations of traffic rules.

Travelers returning from holidays are advised to travel early to avoid delays.

There is a high risk of veld fires because of drought conditions in many parts of country and motorists are urged to avoid driving through thick smoke which make visibility to be poor.
