Minister Mosebenzi Zwane expresses concern at number of fatalities in mining sector

Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi J. Zwane (MP) has expressed his concern at the number of fatal accidents which have occurred at mines so far this year. He has further called on the sector to intensify efforts to ensure that the goal of 'zero harm' is reached.

Minister Zwane was speaking to families of two mineworkers from Impala Platinum's mine in Rustenburg, who were trapped during a fall of ground accident earlier in the week. One of the workers has unfortunately lost his life, and the search for the second worker continues.

Since the beginning of the year, 30 people have lost their lives in mining accidents, compared to 27 in the same period last year.

“It is unfortunate that this is our second visit to Impala Platinum mine this year. We must do better in this regard. Our work as a sector must be to ensure that we stabilize this mining industry in order to ensure that it contributes to job creation and the growth of our economy. Accidents like this delay us achieving this objective,” Minister Zwane said.

“Zero harm remains our goal, and it is possible if we all work together and make health and safety our priority. We cannot afford to rest on our laurels,” the Minister said.
