Minister Zikalala to give progress and unveil the construction of 100 new rural bridges in six provinces.
Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Sihle Zikalala, MP, will on Friday, 27 October 2023, give progress and announce a massive construction of rural bridges that will take place in six provinces.
These bridges will connect communities and guarantee their safety. Minister Zikalala is adamant that no child should miss schools in rural provinces such as the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Limpopo, North West because the rivers swell when it rains.
This will be one of the massive rural infrastructure investments done by a government in post-apartheid South Africa.
These bridges are being built with the huge technical support of our caring army, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and there is a lightning speed in execution.
Some of these rural community bridges were destroyed during the flood disasters and their absence has disconnected communities and made their lives difficult.
This phase of construction work will see the building of 134 rural bridges in the country in the coming months. This will significantly upscale the rural infrastructure development in areas that are poorly serviced with public amenities.
Minister Zikalala will also unpack employment opportunities that are being brought about by this massive construction of rural infrastructure. The construction of these bridges will leave another lasting legacy for the communities.
The escalation in the building of the Welisizwe Rural bridges is one of the Minister’s top priorities in the Build Programme, together with unblocking projects which have stalled for various reasons. The Welisizwe Rural Bridges Programme is being undertaken together with the Department of Defence and Provincial Departments of Transport.
