Minister Dipuo Peters on Benoni air crash victims

Minister of Transport expresses her sympathies to Benoni air crash victims

In light of the preliminary reports depicting a fatal plane crash, which has unfortunately claimed three of its victims, the Minister of Transport, Ms Dipuo Peters, wishes to express her profoundest dismay and shock at the tragedy.

According to reports, three lifeless bodies were found at the scene where the crash took place in Benoni after the light aircraft in which they were traveling spiralled out of control and crashed, causing the small plane to land on its roof. “

The disheartening news of the light aircraft crash in Benoni has taken us all by surprise because South Africa prides itself in having one of the best civil aviation security standards on the African continent and the rest of world”, said Minister Peters.

Figures provided by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) in 2015 indicate that statistics for the years 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2014/15 illustrate a substantial decrease in the number of aircraft accidents and subsequent fatalities reported, and that aircraft accidents came down by 17% in 2014/15 compared to 2013/14.

The Department of Transport and its relevant aviation entities have immediately launched a full investigation to determine the unfortunate circumstances leading to the crash and will release a report upon its conclusion. Ms Peters would like extend her heartfelt condolences to the loved ones, family and friends of the deceased.
