Minister of Transport’s statement on the bus carnage involving ANC Ekurhuleni region volunteers

The Minister of Transport, Ms Dipuo Peters, passes her condolences to the families, friends and the entire African National Congress family, in particular the ANC Ekurhuleni region, Grace Flathela Zone, for the loss of volunteers involved in a bus carnage in the Free State, today, 17 April 2016.

The bus overturned around Kroonstaad earlier this morning when returning from the ANC's Election Manifesto Launch, which was held yesterday, 16 April 2016, at Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape.

In the interim, Minister Peters confirms that eleven people died while others were airlifted to various hospitals in the Free State.

Minister Peters wishes those admitted to hospital a speedy recovery, and enjoined the RTMC to immediately commence with the investigations into the cause of the carnage and for the Road Accident Fund to give the family of the deceased and the injured the necessary support and comfort.

All attempts are made to track and inform the next of kin on the eleven fatalities.

Minister Peters thanks the Free State MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Butana Komphela, the Road Traffic Management Corporation and emergency services for their swift response in assisting the injured.
