Minister Jeff Radebe addresses Fort Hare Autumn School open day, 26 Apr

Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation and Chairperson of the National Planning Commission, Jeff Radebe, will deliver the key note address at the Fort Hare Autumn School at an open day taking place on the occasion of the its 5th anniversary.

The Fort Hare Autumn School Leadership Programme (FHAS) was called into being in 2012 over several informal conversations between a group of men that would become known as the “founding fathers”: Prof Francis Wilson, former Chairperson of the Council of the University Fort Hare, Dr Petrus Strijdom, Director of Fort Hare’s Centre for Leadership Ethics in Africa and the former Director of FES South Africa, Axel Schmidt.

The Autumn School was designed as an intervention to create a new leadership culture in South Africa. It is meant to provide for a specific civic education programme supplementing the formal academic curriculum of university students. The participants graduate with significant growth towards greater maturity and political understanding.

The programme aims to sow some seeds of free and critical thinking and an understanding of Social Democracy by teaching promising young students. Such knowledge together with a sound academic formation enables some of the young generation to become active and socially responsible citizens who could lead the country further and closer to the aspirations of a better South Africa for everyone.

It is about developing young leaders who will later contribute to and shape the political, economic and social debates of this country.

During the day, Minister Radebe will speak on “Envisioning the future South Africa”, this will be followed by questions by students of the Fort Hare Autumn School class of 2015, then an interactive question session with the audience.

In the evening minister will deliver a keynote address on “Leadership” at the Reception Dinner and Graduation Ceremony for the FHAH class of 2015.
