Minister Nathi Mthethwa send condolences to Shakoane family

Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture learns of the passing of Broadcast Legend Grant Shakoane

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has learnt of the passing of radio veteran, Grant Shakoane, who grew up in Mamelodi. Shakoane began his career in advertising at a time when there were few opportunities for people of colour. He began as a translator for the SABC and worked his way to the radio booth.

He was popular for his charismatic broadcast style and catchy phrases such as “For the time of your life and the life of your time”. Shakoane was most prominent during his tenure at Metro FM from the 1980’s and was affectionately known to listeners as Mr “Shebabadoo shebaba”.

On learning of the passing of this seasoned broadcaster, Minister Nathi Mthethwa said “Shakoane was deeply loved by many and his passing has left a void in the hearts of Sunday music lovers everywhere. This gentle giant will forever be remembered as one of the legends of radio. Someone who deeply understood that radio is a theatre of the mind. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and fans. May they find comfort and peace during this difficult time.”

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
