Minister Mthethwa hosts Prof. Ngugi wa Thiong’o at a public lecture on languages and decolonisation in Thohoyandou
As part of the Africa Month colloquium series, the Department of Arts and Culture will on Friday, 09 June 2017, hosts a Public lecture on Languages and Decolonisation with Minister Nathi Mthethwa and Prof. Ngugi wa Thiong’o at the Thulamela Main Library, Thulamela Municipality in Thohoyandou, Venda.
“This year’s Africa Month programme overlaps into the month of June and we are honoured that this programme culminates with a lecture by an eminent African author and public intellectual of note, Prof Ngugi wa Thiong’o” said Minister Mthethwa.
A panel comprising of leading minds in the country including Prof Muxe Nkondo as well as Mama Mathabo Kunene and Alicia Jali will be participating in the discussions.
The 2017 Africa Month celebrations have taken place under the theme, “The Year of OR Tambo: Building a Better Africa and a Better World” to celebrate the legacy of OR Tambo and to promote African Unity. At the core of the colloquia programme discussions “Conversations with the continent” is a fundamental debate on decolonization, given the lingering legacy of colonialism and apartheid, as well as the subject of radical socio-economic and cultural transformation.
