Minister Nathi Mthethwa hosts Indigenous Knowledge System strategic planning workshop at Freedom Park, 17 and 18 Jan

The National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Minister Nathi Mthethwa will on 17 and 18 of January 2023 host the Indigenous Knowledge System (IKS) Panel of Experts strategic workshop session at the Freedom Park Museum, Pretoria.

The two-day strategic planning workshop is aimed at providing roadmap and measures to safeguard South Africa’s indigenous knowledge in danger of extinction.

In 2018, the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture approved that a Reference Panel be appointed to assist the Department with the process of putting together a National Inventory of all South Africa’s diverse and rich indigenous knowledge systems. The inventory of South Africa’s Indigenous Knowledge or Intangible Cultural Heritage is a key element of the National Living Heritage Policy of South Africa as approved by Cabinet in 2017.

Following a need to put together a National Inventory, a Reference Panel of experts has been appointed for a renewable term of 3 years. The workshop will provide a platform for the department and the Experts to deliberate and engage on key strategic objectives of the National Inventory.

The Workshop will unfold as follows:
Date: 17 &18 January 2023 Time: 09h00
Venue: Freedom Park Museum, Pretoria.
