Minister Mthethwa to host the 5th International African Writers Day Lecture at UNISA

Arts and Culture Minister, Mr Nathi Mthethwa invites members of the media to the 5th International African Writers Day Lecture to be held on Monday, 07 November 2016 at Bamboo Lecture Hall, Kgorong Building, UNISA, Pretoria under the theme, “The Role, State and Significance of Writers’ Organisations in Society.”

The lecture forms part of the 5th Annual Africa Century International African Writers Conference hosted under the theme,  “The Role of Writers' Organisations in Society”. The Africa Century International African Writers Conference celebrates the symbiotic relationship between literature, literary activities and political liberation struggles: most apt as we reflect on how far we’ve come and the lessons from this for the future.

Hosted by the wRite associates in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC), the lecture brings together some prominent panelists which include amongst others: Prof Keorapetse Kgositsile, South Africa's National Poet Laureate; Achmat Dangor, Author, poet and academic; Prof Andries Oliphant, Writer, playwright, academic, literary theorist, arts and culture policy developer, and cultural leader to deliberate on various the topic of literature.

For the past four years, the Africa Century International African Writers Conference has afforded African writers, scholars and community at large a platform to deliberate on issues of social, political and human rights through its conference seminars and the International African Writers Day Lectures.
