Minister Naledi Pandor launches 2017 National Science Week in Port Elizabeth, 5 Aug

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, will launch the 2017 National Science Week (NSW) at Nelson Mandela University's Missionvale Campus in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

NSW is an annual celebration of science, engineering and technology, attracting thousands of learners and members of the public to workshops, science shows and lectures, which are held at universities, schools, science centres and public facilities countrywide.

This year's National Science Week will be held from 5 to 12 August under the theme "Advancing science tourism", in recognition of the United Nation's International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

At the Nelson Mandela University's Missionvale Campus alone, more than 80 exhibits will showcase the value of science to society in line with the theme.  A comprehensive list of all the NSW activities across the country can be found on https://www.dst.gov.za/images/2017/HIGHLIGHTS-FOR-NSW-17.pdf.

The launch at NMU is expected to attract about 3 500 learners, 600 students and academics, and a further 1 000 participants, including teachers, the general public and policy makers.

Minister Pandor will be joined by the Eastern Cape Premier, Mr Phumulo Masualle, and the Nelson Mandela University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Derrick Swartz.

Media are invited to the launch.
