Minister Naledi Pandor holds Imbizo in Sutherland, Northern Cape, 29 to 30 Apr

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, will on Saturday, 30 April 2016, hold a government imbizo at Roggeveld Primary School in Sutherland.

Sutherland, in the Northern Cape, is home to the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), which is the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere and among the largest in the world.

Minister Pandor will be joined by Premier Sylivia Lucas, the Namakwa District Executive Mayor, Cllr Vas, and the Karoo Hoogland Mayor, Cllr Julies.

The visit to SALT will give the media the opportunity to tour the facility and learn more about the telescope, and new developments and discoveries.

On Friday, 29 April, Minister Pandor will visit various community projects that have come about as a result of Sutherland hosting SALT.  These include ‑

  • a community outreach centre, which provides computer facilities and a learning centre for learners and adults;
  • the science centre;
  • science laboratories at Sutherland High School and Roggeveld Primary School.
