Minister Mosebenzi Zwane hosts inaugural South African Diamond Indaba, 27 Oct

The Minister of Mineral Resources, Mr Mosebenzi Joseph Zwane (MP), together with the State Diamond Trader (SDT), will host the inaugural Diamond Indaba on 27 October 2015 at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg.

The Indaba will be driven under the theme “Enabling South Africa to become the Heartbeat of Diamond Beneficiation in Africa”.  It will attract role-players within the diamond industry, including producers, beneficiators, industry associations, government, jewellery manufacturers, as well as   international diamond stakeholders.

The objective of the Indaba is to support beneficiation, as the Department of Mineral Resources seeks to leverage the country’s comparative advantage in mineral resource endowment to create a competitive advantage for domestic mineral beneficiating entities, thus playing a contributory role towards setting the country’s growth trajectory on a production-led growth path.

Government’s focus has always been on developing historically disadvantaged individuals in order to transform the landscape of diamond manufacturing to include a more diverse population.

Minister Zwane will deliver the keynote address at the Indaba.

The State Diamond Trader, an entity reporting to the Minister of Mineral Resources, was established in terms of the Diamond Act, 56 of 1986 to promote equitable access to and beneficiation of diamond resources, address distortions in the diamond industry and correct historical market failure to develop and grow South Africa’s diamond cutting and polishing industry. The SDT also carries the function of providing assistance to Historically Disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs).
