De Doorns lies within the Cape Winelands District Municipality and is home to many of the vulnerable workers who work in farms in this country. According to Statistics South Africa De Doorns has a population of 10 583 people with 8 244 economically active and of those 21% unemployed. Furthermore this vicinity is characterized by a population that has low levels of education with less access to information gadgets like internet, media and computers.
This is an indicative trend nationally when it comes to vulnerable workers like farm and domestic workers. The Department of Labour is in a drive to conduct workshops in various parts of the country to create awareness and educate venerable workers about their rights in the languages that they are comfortable with.
The Minister of Labour will herself participate in workshop among many that will be conducted right through the province of Western Cape and the Country.
