Minister of Labour, Mildred Oliphant, convenes career exhibition in KwaNongoma to address unemployment and skills shortages

The Minister of Labour, Mildred Oliphant, will host a career exhibition in KwaNongoma, Zululand, on Friday 7 October 2016, with the youth and unemployed persons to address the levels of unemployment and skills shortages in the rural town.

The exhibition is aimed at equipping the pupils and unemployed people in the area with skills and knowledge that will enable them to participate in the labour market by, amongst others, providing guidance on how to draft CV, preparing for an interview, opening their own businesses, and being up-skilled to qualify for jobs.

According to the 2011 Census figures by Statistics South Africa, only 33% of the population have a primary education in KwaNongoma. The total population is 194 908 and the unemployment rate is 49.2% and youth unemployment is 59.9%.

Various stakeholders, including private companies, government departments, Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) and TVET Colleges will showcase their learning and employment opportunities to the pupils and unemployed people. The Department of Labour will also provide career counselling and register unemployed persons to its work seeker database for possible employment opportunities.
