Minister Malusi Gigaba addresses Early Registration of Birth Indaba, 4 Dec

The Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, will deliver the keynote address at the Early Registration of Birth Indaba held in Durban.

The Department of Home Affairs is hosting the Indaba, which started today with technocrats thrashing out technical aspects related to early registration of birth processes.

Earlier this year, Minister Gigaba announced his intention to end the Late Registration of Birth process in its current form by 31 December 2015. To this end, government aims to introduce new procedures and tariffs to ensure the security and accuracy of the National Population Register during the birth registration process.

Key messages to be driven during the Indaba include enforcing birth registration within 30 days; discouraging late registrations of birth (LRB); ensuring that the only entry to the National Population Register is through early birth registration; and closing the loophole of false registrations and fraudulent claims to SA citizenship by illegal foreign nationals and syndicates.
