The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Hon. Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, will this morning, 31 July 2017, deliver the keynote address at the Pan-African Women’s Day Inter-Generational Dialogue at the OR Tambo Building in Pretoria. The event is being held under the theme: “The Year of OR Tambo: Women United in Moving Africa Forward”.
The Pan-African Women’s Day is commemorated annually to mark the formation of the Pan-African Women Organisation (PAWO) in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania, on 31 July 1962. PAWO was the first continental women’s organisation. Its main aim was to mobilise women to fight for their liberation, especially in countries that were still colonised.
The year 2017 marks 55 years since the formation of the PAWO, a year before the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).
During the 28th Ordinary Assembly of the AU, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in January 2017, the African Heads of State and Government adopted a decision recognising PAWO as a Specialised Agency of the AU.
