Minister Lindiwe Sisulu interacts with protesting communities of Johannesburg, 14 May

The Minister of Human Settlement Ms Lindiwe Sisulu, MP will tomorrow, 14 May 2017 visit and interact with the community representatives of Ernedale, Eldorado Park, Finetown, Kliptown, Freedom Park, Westbury, Riverlea, Bosmont, Claremont and other areas in the City of Johannesburg affected by service delivery  protests that took place this week.

The Political Committee (affected Ministers, MEC and Mayors) meeting held on 11 May 2017 in Pretoria instructed that the Technical Team led by Human Settlements Director-General, Mbulelo Tshangana work with community structures to ensure that the solution is responsive, inclusive and involves the community.

The Political Committee acknowledges that the issues behind the protests are genuine and deserve a response that will give lasting solutions. Some of these problems relate to lack of housing, jobs, illegal invasion of land, communities not benefiting from economic opportunities and heightened levels of crime.

Government is also worried about the high criminal activities that distort the genuine concerns of the various communities.

Minister Sisulu will be accompanied by the Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Mr Des Van Rooyen, Gauteng MEC of Human Settlements, Mr Paul Mashatile, Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Herman Mashaba, MMC Nkomo and officials from all spheres of government.
