The Minister of Labour ,Ms Mildred Oliphant will be hosting a COID Ministerial Imbizo in Mbombela (Mpumalanga) at Kabokweni Stadium.
The purpose of the event is to educate employees about COID services, benefits their rights in terms of the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act and to sensitise them about occupational health and safety in the workplace. There will also be a Help Desk to attend to queries on injuries on duty and occupational diseases contracted on duty. The event will be held under the theme of "Working for the injured and striving to protect them".
During the month of May the Department of Labour conducted various inspections in different sectors as part of the workers month campaign. During the inspections it was observed that most employees do not fully understand what the purpose of the Compensation Fund is. It was also noted that some employers do not report workplace accidents as required by the COID Act.
The event will target employees from the Forestry, Retail and Farming sectors, however, employees from other sectors are also encouraged to attend the event.
The services that will be rendered on that day are:
- Compensation Fund: COID claims and unreported accidents
- Public Employment Services; work seeker registration
- Inspection and Enforcement Services:Complaints and queries
