Minister Gugile Nkwinti hands over houses to evicted farm workers at Radway Green Farm, 14 Dec

“Families to spend Xmas in their newly build homes”

The Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Gugile Nkwinti will on Monday 14 December 2015 hand over 27 houses to evicted farm workers at Radway Green Farm outside Grahamstown, Eastern Cape.

The houses were built by the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) for 27 workers who were labour tenants of the Radway Green Farm, this after they were forced off the land following a dispute with the farmer. The families have been living in temporary structures provided by DRDLR in partnership with the Makana local municipality since their eviction three years ago.

Through the Pro-Active Land Acquisition Strategy of the Department a 53 hectare portion of land was purchased with the aim of securing tenure for the worker who survives by working on neighbouring farms while others have livestock. The houses are built on principles of environmental sustainability and have solar power, water harvesting tanks, and a waste management system. It is expected that Minister Nkwinti joined at the hand-over ceremony by the Minister of Human Settlements.
