Minister Dipuo Peters extends her most heartfelt sympathies to the families, friends, and colleagues of Maritzburg United Football club star, Mondli Cele, and SABC sports journalist, Delisile Ngwenya who succumbed to their injuries when the vehicle that they were traveling in lost control and careened into Umsunduzi River in Pietermaritzburg this past weekend.
The Minister of Transport urges extreme caution to all road users across the country as traffic volumes are increasing due to people returning from their various holiday destinations.
“As traffic volumes begin to normalise, I would like to, once again, call upon all South Africans to refrain from using cellphones, driving at excessively high speeds, and driving while intoxicated because this obscene behaviour has dire consequences”.
Minister Peter’s admonition is compelled by the Festive Season Road Crash and Fatalities Statistics that were released on the 12th of January 2016 which indicated that the majority of fatal accidents occurred on weekends - a combined total of 57.9% from Friday to Sunday.
Ms. Peters added “we plead with road users to exercise caution and to drive safely at all times as road safety is a 365 day responsibility that we all share as South Africans”.
The Minister also took the opportunity to wish the two unnamed passengers who were injured in the crash a swift and full recovery.
