Minister Dipuo Peters passes condolences to families of Transnet train drivers

The Minister of Transport, Ms Dipuo Peters, passes her heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the Transnet train driver and train assistant who died when a Transnet goods train derailed at the Delvillewood train station following a landslide in Hillcrest west of Durban, on Saturday, 3rd September 2016.

Reports from the scene indicate that a landslide caused by the heavy rain resulted in the train to derail.

Rescue unit and the firemen had to travel down a gravel road down the side of a mountain and cut fallen trees and pull them off the road to gain access to the wreckage of the train.

When they arrived they found that a man and a woman tragically died in the crash and was still trapped in the train wreckage.

The rescue officer and the firemen used the Jaws of Life to cut the people free from the twisted metal. The two bodies were removed from the train and then handed over to the police on the scene.

“To the families of the deceased, please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and our hearts goes out to you in your time of sorrow,” Minister Peters remarked.
