COGTA Minister to address media on elections preparations

The Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Des Van Rooyen will brief media on the country’s readiness for the 2016 local government elections as follows:

As head of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Elections, Minister Van Rooyen leads an intra-governmental team that oversees the smooth running of the elections. This IMC includes ministries of Justice and Constitutional Development; Home Affairs; Police; State Security; and Communications. The Chairpersons of the Independent Electoral Commission, the South African Local Government Association and the Municipal Demarcation Board also form part of the Committee.

The briefing will outline the department’s readiness and preparedness for the 2016 local government elections, which will take place on 03 August 2016, as well as progress on implementation of the second phase of the Back to Basics approach.
