Minister Blade Nzimande and German Minister of Research and Education Bettina Stark-Watzinger address Research Networks for Health Innovation in Sub-Saharan Africa (RHISSA) meeting, 28 Mar

German minister visits South Africa to strengthen bilateral cooperation in science, technology and innovation

The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, welcomes the German Minister of Research and Education, Bettina Stark-Watzinger, on her two-day visit to South Africa.

This evening, the ministers will sign a declaration to establish a joint research chair on the just energy transition, during a dinner in Cape Town. Ahead of the signing, Minister Stark-Watzinger will tour the Hydrogen Catalysis Centre of Competence at the University of Cape Town.

Both ministers will address the Research Networks for Health Innovation in Sub-Saharan Africa (RHISSA) meeting, which takes place in Cape Town on 28 March 2023.

The German minister's visit is aimed at, among other things, strengthening bilateral relations and celebrating the success of the German-funded RHISSA programme. RHISSA has seen an investment of €50 million over five years and is in its second phase.

Minister Stark-Watzinger will also visit the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) site in the Northern Cape in anticipation of full German membership of the SKA Organisation.
