Minister Angie Motshekga launches the Ministerial Task Team Textbook Evaluation Report, 5 Apr

The Minister of Basic Education Mrs Angie Motshekga will on Friday, 05 April 2019 launch the Ministerial Task Team Textbook Evaluation Report at the DBE Conference Centre in Pretoria, Gauteng.

The brief of the Ministerial Committee, which was published in the Government Gazette of 12 February 2016, was to look into social variables such as racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination in textbooks. The Committee led by Professor Crain Soudien from the Human Sciences Research Council, was selected based on their expertise and experience in the fields of education research and diversity.

The Department undertook a mini evaluation of a sample of school textbooks and LTSMs which indicated that, although a screening process is conducted, textbooks still contain discriminatory content.  The full report will be uploaded on the departmental website: www.dbe.gov.za

Some of the speakers at the launch of the report includes the chair of the Ministerial Committee Prof Crain Soudien, who is the CEO of Human Sciences Research Council.
