During the apartheid era NGOs played a pivotal role in bringing Apartheid to an end. They served as one of the legitimate structures through which to extend development to disenfranchised people in South Africa.
It is clear the funding context, mode of engagement with government and the capacity requirements in the NGO sector have changed dramatically since 1994. Many NGOs have vanished due to their inability to navigate the challenges posed by these changes. This dynamic requires a reflection at a national level to ensure that the capacity of the NGO sector is optimally utilised towards the national development goals in more systematic and sustainable ways.
The chairpersons of the NECT’s Education Dialogue, Prof Ihron Rensburg and Deputy Minister Enver Surty have the pleasure of inviting you to a summit intended to achieve the following outcomes:
- A refreshed focus and recommitment of NGOs towards the NDP goals
- A more streamlined and networked NGO sector
- Improved understanding of how the NGO sector can be sustained
- Increased potential for collaboration among NGOs
- Greater clarity on the changing needs of Government, business and other funders in education development.
The Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga, will address the summit on these important issues relating to the NDP. Also joining the NGOs will be representatives of government and the education funding community.
