Labour hosts workshop on transformation at workplaces, 8 Sept

Department of Labour and Commission for Employment Equity discusses employment equity with Mining and Quarrying and the Electricity, gas and water supply sectors

The Department of Labour and the Commission for Employment Equity (CEE) will on Thursday (8 September 2016) turn the spotlight towards Mining & Quarrying and the Electricity, gas & water supply sectors this week when it interacts with them on the slow pace of transforming their workplaces.

The workshop will be held on 8 September at the St Georges Hotel & Conference Centre, Irene in Gauteng Province.

The engagement is held with business leaders to address concerns regarding the slow pace of transforming the South African labour market, where designated groups are still confined to the lower levels in the workplace.

The aim of the sectoral engagements is to consult business leaders or their representatives (managers, human resource officers, EE officers among others) on employment equity issues. The CEE is interested in establishing challenges that employers face in employment equity implementation and strategies so as to overcome them.

The department and CEE are planning to host the last two sector engagements on EE with the Wholesale Sector (14 September: Indaba Hotel, Fourways in Gauteng); and Local Government (22 September: at The Aviator Hotel in Kempton Park, Gauteng).

The series of engagements was first held on 23 June 2016 with the Retail & Motor sector at Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre, Boksburg, in Gauteng Province. Subsequent engagements have been held with Finance, Catering & Accommodation, Wholesale, Construction, Transport and Educational Institutions.
