Mhlabatshane Dam to supply thousands of villagers with water
The Department of Water and Sanitation continues to perform on its legislative mandate of ensuring provision of basic water infrastructure to all communities.
The completion of Phase One of the Mhlabatshane Dam at UGu District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal is aimed at reducing water services backlogs in certain rural areas in the Umzumbe and Hibiscus Coast Local Municipalities.
The scheme extends from Phungashe, within the Nhlangwini Tribal Authority in the north to Assisi Mission, within the Shabeni Tribal Authority in the south.
The Mhlabatshane Dam will initially supply about 32.5 litres per person a day in 49 tribal wards stretching from the Highflats area down to the coastal belt near Port Shepstone. The daily volume will be increased to about 60 litres a person once a second phase of the project is completed in 2021.
This project is funded the Department of Water and Sanitation through the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant programme (RBIG) and is implemented by Umgeni Water who will also operate it, while UGu District Municipality is responsible for reticulating the water from the bulk scheme.
