North West Local Government rolls out induction programme for Municipal Public Accounts Committee members

Members of MPAC in Maquassi-hills local municipalities undergoes induction programme

In order to create accountable and financially viable municipalities, the Department of Local Government and Human Settlements in Bokone Bophirima rolled out a three days long induction programme for members of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) of Maquassi hills local municipality in Dr Kenneth Kaunda district.

The programme which was tailored for all councilors in the committee seeks to ensure that the committee is competent in the areas of leadership and legislation that is applicable to local government, key municipal processes and developmental local government services.

Addressing the members this week, the Chairperson of the Provincial Public Accounts Committee, Mahlakeng Mahlakeng said the induction comes after several failed attempts in establishing and inducting MPAC councilors for Maquassi hills local municipality.

During his presentation, Mahlakeng urged all Chairpersons of MPACs in all municipalities to refrain from engaging in acts of corruption and to hold members of the Mayoral Committee accountable for effective functioning of the municipalities.

He further urged them to take full responsibility for turning the hopes of citizens into sustained service delivery that enriches all the lives of communities a financially sustainable basis”, he said.

MPAC is a council committee established in terms of Section 79 (1) of the Municipal Structures Act. MPACs are intended to strengthen the oversight arrangements in the municipality and to ensure efficient and effective use of municipal resources.
