On Wednesday, 9 March 2016, the Chairperson of Chairpersons, Hon. Nono Maloyi expressed his disappointment after learning of an alleged racist behaviour that occurs at the Sannieshof Police Station.
This Legislature learnt about this during the public meeting held with the community of Agisanang in Sannieshof.
A man, who requested to remain anonymous, requested an urgent intervention from the Members of the Provincial Legislature, on the alleged racist behaviour that happens behind the holding cells at the police station.
He stated that the conditions that inmates stay in are appalling and not hygienic at all whilst the white inmates are treated differently.
“White inmates are treated like royalty, as compared to black inmates who can be found using toilets that are not reputable for any human being.
“Toilets used by white inmates have keys that black inmates cannot access, that is unfair and barbaric,” said the man.
Hon. Maloyi was shocked to learn of this and recommended an immediate intervention on the said matter
“We cannot be dealing with issues such as this after 22 years of democracy, it disheartening to still hear of barbaric behaviour such as this,” he said.
It was also alleged that the station manager of the police station, is a former police officer under the apartheid regime.
Other urgent matters which were mentioned, was the lack of management support from the Tswaing Local Municipality which has failed to rehabilitate the community of Utlwanang on waste management and sanitation.
Members of the community said that amongst others, their area is filthy they leave in squalor, as there is no waste refuse bin that the community can use in their homes to promote a clean, hygienic environment.
The dumping site which was used prior 1994 is still located in the middle of where the impoverished people reside in. Members of the community stated that they requested for a waste bin since the year 2000, but have not been allocated with one.
An area in ward 10 does not have any waste removal mechanism which is ordinarily a responsibility of the municipality, causing a flies and dirt to be scattered all over.
The other area of concern is the unending odour of the sewer located about a kilometre from the township which leaks regularly and has caused various diseases, such as tuberculosis in the community
Members of the Legislature made recommendations to write report on issues presented by the community and stated that the lack of service delivery is a clear indication of unwillingness to work by the officials from the municipality.
The report would be consolidated and given to the relevant Members of the Executive Council to intervene swiftly on challenges brought forth.
