Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries meets SABBS Executives

Meeting between DAFF and Executives of the Interim Steering Committee of the South African Boerboel Breeders Society (SABBS)

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries would like to clarify the statement published by the SABBS’ Interim Executive Steering Committee on the outcome of the meeting held with the Registrar of the Animal Improvement Act, 1998 (Act No. 62 of 1998) on 1, December 2015.

The DAFF representatives met with the SABBS Interim Executive Steering Committee representative members, Koos van der Westhuizen and Kenny van der Merwe on Tuesday, 1 December 2015.
The meeting agreed that:

  1. The Registrar will accept the SABBS Constitution, passed by members at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of 6 December 2014 and that the SABBS will proceed to convene an Annual General Meeting in terms of the Animal Improvement Act, 1998 (Act No. 62 of 1998).
  1. The Registrar will accept the SABBS Constitution, passed by members at the Special General Meeting on 6 July 2015, only if the black colour is excluded as part of the Boerboel breed standard, subject to the outcome of the proposed scientific investigation on the black colour.
  1. The scientific research on the black Boerboel must be done at any International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) accredited institution.
  1. Subject to the outcome of the research, breeders of black Boerboels are urged to continue submitting birth notifications of all black litters and puppies; however, such registration will be cancelled if the scientific study proves otherwise.
