Parliament briefs media on assessment of key legislation, 24 May

Media briefing: Independent Panel on Assessment of Key Legislation finalises schedule for series of public hearings and engagements

Date: Tuesday, 24 May 2016
Time: 15h30
Venue: Atlantic 2, Radisson Blu Le Vendome Hotel, 14 London Road, Sea Point Cape Town.

The Panel on Assessment of Key Legislation, chaired by former President Kgalema Motlanthe, invites members of the media to a media briefing today on the Panel’s work schedule and programme of public engagements.

The 17-member panel of independent experts was launched in January by National Assembly Speaker, Ms Baleka Mbete, on behalf of the Speakers’ Forum. Its mandate is to assess the effectiveness of key legislation passed by Parliament since 1994. It will do this through public consultations across the country, calls for submissions from the public, public hearings and other research processes.

The panel will, among others assess implementation of laws, identify gaps and propose necessary interventions and recommendations. This will entail identifying laws that need to be strengthened or amended and those that are the enablers and/or drivers of the country’s transformational agenda.

The panel will also assess the laws that impede the realisation of the country’s developmental agenda and the goal of becoming a truly developmental state. The panel is scheduled to make recommendations and submit its final report to the Speakers’ Forum at the end of its term.
