MEC Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana warns reckless drivers this Easter

MEC, Mapula Mokaba Phukwana says to road users, “Don’t ignore the signs” this Easter and beyond.

Death coursed by accidents on our roads requires the collective and individual responsibility of all road users travelling to Moria. Remind each other about the signs of the road. Buckle up as you prepare to heed the road. Don’t ignore the signs. Don’t just cruse, remember the signs. Don’t ignore the signs. Walk responsibly. Help us help you arrive at your Easter destination safe.

The past long weekend we arrested 95 drivers for drunken driving. 71 Minibuses were confiscated and charged for overloading amongst them an arrest made in Capricorn District for 31 passengers overload. 17 passengers were travelling without legal permits. The driver of the overloaded minibus was charged for transporting illegal immigrant and the Minibus was discontinued due to un-roadworthiness.

Hundreds of thousands of our law enforcement officers Posted for 24 hours by MEC, Mapula Mokaba Phukwana shall flood all corners of the province upholding the provincial vision of ensuring a safe and secure province for 24 hours during this Easter.

We are combat ready to monitor the already showing heavy traffic flow over the Moria pilgrimage weekend. Traffic officials will be working from Maubane to Beit Bridge monitoring traffic flow on the N1, R71 from Polokwane via Moria gate to Mopani, R37 from Polokwane via Maja cross to Burgersfort, R101, R36, R81,

R521 and Gilead road via Matlala to Grobler’s bridge on our boarders with Botswana is under construction. Road users are urged to contact our call center at 0800 0066 94for traffic updates, or talk to officers conducting point duty on all our intersections, and notification of  stray animals points and pedestrians hazards.

The R512 between Thabazimbi and Belabela is under Construction, motorists are advised to practice patience and work together with the Construction officers when approaching these points.

MEC Mokaba-Phukwana again calls on all road users to:

  • obey all the rules of the road
  • exercise patience
  • refrain from drinking and driving
  • Take a rest when feeling tired.

She urges law enforcement officers to show no mercy to traffic law violators. “We will also strengthen our road safety campaign. Government welcomes partnerships that will assist in encouraging good behavior on the roads and ensure that the people of the Province feel safe on our roads. Together we will move South Africa forward”, MEC Mokaba –Phukwana said.

“Don’t ignore the signs” road responsibility is everyone’s responsibility.
