MECs Mamabolo and Mazibuko conduct a site inspection at the Kagiso Memorial and Recreational Centre

Gauteng Members of the Executive Council (MECs) for Infrastructure Development Mr. Jacob Mamabolo and for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Ms. Faith Mazibuko today conducted a site-inspection of the construction site of the newly-completed Kagiso Memorial and Recreational Centre.

The centre will serve as a memorial site that recognises the contribution of local people to the struggle for freedom and democracy.

On site both MECs convened a meeting with officials and contactors to ensure that timelines are not missed and that the memorial is handed over at the end of September.

The facility is an addition to the immovable asset register of the province and also serves as a common symbol of the heritage of the people of the area.

During construction, which started in March 2014 the monument created a total of 215 jobs, which includes the training of eighty (80) youth and forty (40) adults. As part of involving the community in the project thirty three (33) local subcontractors benefited during construction. Other participants in the project included military veterans and EPWP beneficiaries from in and around Kagiso.

The funding of R45million was mainly provided by the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) as part of their corporate social responsibility. The GMA is the provincial body tasked by Gauteng Provincial Government with operating and managing the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link Project.
