MEC Pauline Williams on taxi violence

MEC Williams calls for threats of taxi violence to come to an end

The MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ms Pauline Williams calls for an immediate end to threats of taxi violence alleged to erupt in Kimberley and intimidation in the taxi industry.

We call upon the affected parties in the taxi industry to work together with the department towards finding a quick, amicable and reasonable solution to the matters at hand. Threats of violence or intimidation cannot be a means to resolve differences.

As a Department and as government, we do not condone violence in any form or as a solution to any matter. We remain committed to an open door policy and we are hard at work trying to find a lasting solution to the challenges facing the industry.

We are aware of some of the challenges raised by affected parties and engagements to resolve the disputes are in progress. The department is working with other law enforcement agencies in a bid to resolve this matter.

We cannot have a situation of unrest in the industry for any reason as it will not only impact on the industry itself but those relying on its services for transportation.

We must emphasise that anyone loading in a non-designated loading area will be transgressing the authority awarded to them by their operating license and will in turn face the possibility of having their operating licenses withdrawn because of this.

We request the full cooperation of all involved parties to reach an amicable solution for all involved without resorting to any form of violence or intimidation, as the law will be enforced on anyone transgressing the law.
