MEC Wendy Nelson assists schools on their challenges

Bokone Bophirima Acting MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements Wendy Nelson has committed to assist Leteane Secondary School and Kebalipile High School in Mahikeng to overcome their challenges to ensure that learners perform to their optimum and receive greater pass rate at the end of the year.

MEC Wendy Nelson who was accompanied by senior officials from the Department of Education visited the schools which are situated in Magogoe Koikoi Village and Montshioa Township respectively, to check on their state of readiness for the 2016 calendar year.

During her visit MEC Nelson found teaching and learning had commenced as expected. However during her interaction with school leadership several challenges surfaced that needed swift intervention from the government.

The schools raised common challenges which range from shortage of staff members, the need of refurbishment of infrastructure such as toilets, lack of text books, lack of security, late registration of learners and usage of dagga as a drug amongst boys.

“We will do our very best to ensure that we help these schools to overcome these obstacles and obtain hundred percent pass rates. We are aiming for 100% pass. Education is the future for our children and as government we can only offer proper learning environment so that learners can perform to the best of their ability” said Nelson.

MEC Nelson was impressed by the situation at Leteane High School. She attended the morning prayer assembly where she took the opportunity to motivate all learners. “There’s order in this school, general discipline, proper planning, teaching and learning is taking place and the leadership is proactive. We want you continue to do the good work that you have been doing.

However on the usage of dagga, we will engage MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management Gaoage Molapisi so that there’s regular search of learners by the police, to eliminate completely the usage of dagga by some boys in the school” concluded MEC Nelson.

The school visit initiative by the provincial government was to ensure that schools in and around the province are ready for teaching and learning so that they perform to their best ability and deal with challenges faced.
