MEC Anroux Marais on Pippa Ehrlich, James Reed and Craig Foster Oscar-win for Best Documentary

Minister Marais congratulates My Octopus Teacher on Oscar win

With great excitement, Minister Anroux Marais congratulates Pippa Ehrlich, James Reed and Craig Foster for bringing home the Oscar for the Best Documentary at the 93rd Academy Awards held in Los Angeles last night.

Minister Marais said, “I extend the greatest congratulations to Pippa Ehrlich, James Reed, Craig Foster and their support team on the global recognition of winning the Best Documentary Oscar at the 93rd Academy Awards. The extraordinary documentary is so special for us as it was captured in the kelp bushes of False Bay, near our very own local Simon’s Town. Making it all the more significant is that the year 2020 could be described as strangely bizzare and in this film, the bond between man and creature is brilliantly documented but also highlights the healing effect of social connection during a time of physical distance. This is indeed an international showcase of our local beauty and environmental assets, and we hope it inspires responsible tourism and the preservation of our oceans into the future. We wholeheartedly thank the team for sharing this, not only with us, but the world at large”.

At the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), we believe that the people of the Western Cape hum with artistic and creative talent. Wherever you are, you will hear a tune. From the robots, skillful crafters sell their wares. Artists create colourful works in their studios, while dancers warm up for a show. Poets, writers and storytellers gather and conjure their tales. The Cultural Services of the DCAS serves this hum and facilitates the promotion, preservation and development of arts and culture in the province. We will continue to create the platforms needed to showcase and develop talent to support our local performing and creative arts practitioners, artists and musicians, as well as artisans and arts administrators.
