MEC Ismail Vadi on violent behaviour along Daveyton-Dunswart rail line

Vadi supports Metrorail decision to suspend Springs, Daveyton and Dunswart train services

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi, today expressed his serious concern over reports of violent behaviour, intimidation and incidents of physical attacks aimed at Metrorail train drivers and guards by small bands of thuggish commuters along the Daveyton-Dunswart rail line.

Vadi condemned these rail bandits who are placing the lives of public transport personnel at grave risk and disrupting rail services for working people.

"This kind of violence and lawlessness must be condemned in the strongest possible way," said Vadi."

He said that he was very disappointed that rail services were being suspended indefinitely by Metrorail along the Daveyton-Dunswart corridor due to the violent behaviour of a handful of thugs, but it was entirely understandable under the circumstances.

Vadi supported Metrorail's decision saying that the safety of our drivers and passengers comes first.

He called on Metrorail drivers who want to serve the community diligently and with dignity to continue to do so and appealed to the law-abiding commuters to assist the railway police in arresting and rooting out these thugs from our trains.

"We urge members of the community, in particular train commuters, to report and work with our law enforcement agencies in bringing to book the these criminals," said Vadi.

"The wilful torching and stoning of trains and assaults on train drivers must stop immediately. Otherwise, Metrorail services will remain suspended," he warned.
