Eastern Cape Provincial Department of Human Settlements MEC Helen Sauls-August will release a five year human settlements delivery report covering the period 2011- 2016.
Housing is a basic human right and access to it by the constitution of the country. The department through the informal settlements Upgrading Programme has reduced the housing backlog in the province from 750 854 in 2001 to 606 616 in 2011. According to Census 2011 report, 7.7% of people in Eastern Cape (EC) live in informal settlements (v.s. South Africa: 13, 6%) a reduction from 11,5% in 2007).
The reports contains the exact number of units built, rectified defective houses, number of title deeds and total budget expenditure on Human Settlements Development between 2011- 2016.
