Elderly beneficiary to get a house as part of World Habitat Day

Eastern Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Ms Helen Sauls-August will observe the World habitat day by handing over a house to an elderly beneficiary in Kubusie, Sutterheim tomorrow.

In resolution 40/202 of 17 December 1985, the UN General Assembly designated the first Monday of October of every year as the world habitat day. The 2016 World Habitat Day campaign aims to raise awareness about the need for affordable housing for all in urban areas, town and cities. The theme for this year is: “Housing at the Centre”.

The 76 years old, Gogo Nomakula Busakwe is currently staying in a mud dilapidated structure that is having major structural cracks which can fall at any time. She is one of the farm dwellers from surrounding farms around Sutterheim were either facing threat of eviction or evicted from farming areas and that they finally settled on mixed slum like timber or mud structures at Kubusie settlement area. In this area, a total of 304 housing units has been approved with a budget of over R30 million rand with over 100 houses have been completed.
