MEC Galaletsang Gaolaolwe warns contractors on sub-standard work

Bokone Bophirima Local Government and Human Settlements MEC, Galaletsang Gaolaolwe is set to meet with contractors and also inspect houses in Matlosana local municipality, for the next two days in a bid to force them to comply or face blacklisting and having their companies de-registered. This is to nip the problem of shoddy work done on housing, in the bud.

A local woman contractor, who was allocated 66 units in 2014, had only built 16 units which had visible concrete slap reinforced with shack materials at Phoi Phoi’s house in Jouberton Extension 13. Building materials were also left on top of Phoi’s dilapidated shack.

Speaking at a meeting with housing contractors and inspection of incomplete RDP houses at Jouberton in Matlosana local municipality, MEC Gaolaolwe said the notion of construction companies being paid for building shoddy houses for the poor was appalling.

“If government is to incur costs building houses for our people, the least that contractors can do benefiting from, is to ensure that these houses are of a decent standard’’, she said.

MEC Gaolaolwe will also conduct similar visits in the remaining municipalities throughout the province with the t aim is to strengthening partnerships, ensuring that project yield targeted job opportunities, housing targets are met without compromising quality and that early warning and monitoring systems are in place for accelerated housing delivery and prompt intervention.
