The MEC for Education Honourable Ishmael Kgetjepe and the Minister of Basic Education, Honourable Angie Motshekga had a session with the top management of Limpopo Department of Education. This is a follow-up on minister’s announcement that she will visit provinces to provide support in the endeavour to improve quality of education. Minister announced this during the release of 2015 results at the beginning of the year.

Matters under discussion included the speedy merging of small schools which are dysfunctional for the benefit of learners. One hundred schools have been merged around the province and there are 201 identified schools which will be merged soon. There are also plans to source out additional funds to make it possible for the department to deal extensively with infrastructure challenges.

The department is currently dealing with the backlog of about 1000 storm damaged schools and also provide for new projects. There are 93 projects in different stages as part of the infrastructure delivery plans.

The meeting acknowledged the good work of the department in providing Learner Teacher Support Material (LTSM) for 2016 education year on time. There are 202 employees for special schools, 164 for public schools and 158 employees to be placed in Circuit Offices. These include teachers and support staff to be placed before the end of March 2016.

There are 516 principal posts, 322 Deputy Principals and 974 schools’ Heads of department posts planned to be filled in the 2016/7 financial year. This initiative will enhance learning and teaching processes in different schools. Appointment of these employees will bring in relief to shortage of teachers and support staff challenges across the province.
