MEC Alan Winde: Opening of Century City Conference Centre and Hotel

Alan Winde, MEC of Economic Opportunities, officially opened the Century City Conference Centre and Hotel.

The Western Cape’s economy is growing steadily.

We’ve already secured conference bids worth almost R2 billion in this financial year.

Just two of these conferences, the World Ophthalmology Congress 2020 and the International Fiscal Association 2022 will bring 16,300 delegates to our province and generate R262 million for our economy.

These trends speak to business confidence in our region.  It is excellent news for our tourism sector, which Project Khulisa has identified as a key growth area. One of the strategic intents we have set for ourselves under Project Khulisa is to create an enabling environment which grows business tourism to the region.

Currently, 204 000 people are employed in this sector. Each of them are our brand ambassadors.

Under Project Khulisa, we have the goal of adding up to a further 100 000 jobs to the sector.

With this growth comes a high demand for new businesses and hospitality offerings.

We have to make sure we do not miss out on opportunities to attract and service this growing demand.

I am therefore thrilled to be at the launch of the Century City Conference Centre and Hotel. This project will make a major contribution to drawing in and accommodating new business.

I would like to commend the Rabie Project Group for this R1 billion investment into the Western Cape.

One of its most significant impacts is on the lives of the people who will be employed here, and those who will gain indirect business from it.

Through this new initiative, 300 jobs are being created.

This is how we make sure our residents are benefitting from our growing economy.

This project is sure to deliver an increase in the number of conference delegates to our region, and I wish its team very well in building up a successful business.
