Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, today (17 February 2016) announced the new members of the board of Wesgro, the Cape’s destination marketing, trade and investment promotion agency.
Minister Winde has appointed three new members to the board who bring to it a diverse set of skills: Sipho Nzuza, Ashraf Ameen and Wendy Appelbaum.
“The board is tasked with providing strategic leadership to Wesgro and overseeing its performance. Project Khulisa has identified tourism as a key sector for the province. This sector already employs 204 000 residents and we have the goal of adding up to 100 000 jobs in tourism.
“As our destination marketing agency, Wesgro’s key goals are boosting tourism and exports and increasing inward investment. I am confident that the newest members of the board have the attributes and experience needed to ensure Wesgro delivers on these objectives,” said Minister Winde.
Wesgro CEO Tim Harris says " the diverse skills and experience that the new members bring to the board will help Wesgro to position the Cape as a hub for inter-regional business and a world-class tourism destination".
Harris believes that the combined experience of Mr Nzuza, Mr Ameen, and Ms Appelbaum in tourism, logistics and business makes them a perfect fit for the Wesgro board.
“The V&A Waterfront and canal precinct – incorporating the expanded Convention Centre and soon the new Museum of Contemporary Africa Art – is a perfect example of how business, leisure, and tourism blend seamlessly in the Western Cape.
Sipho Nzuza is the Cape Town Port Manager at Transet National Ports Authority.
Ashraf Ameen is an entrepreneur who owned and operated South Africa’s first black-owned Harvey World Travel Franchise.
Wendy Appelbaum is an entrepreneur and the current owner and chair of De Morgezon Estate, a Stellenosch-based wine estate and agri-business.
The term of the current board ends in 2017.
