The Mamusa water crisis is currently being addressed through water tankering whilst working on permanent solutions.
Since the recently established task team comprising of the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality, Mamusa Local Municipality and Department of Water and Sanitation the situation of water crises in the area has drastically improved. This comes following the drying up of Wentzel dam which resulted in the shutting down of the Water Treatment Plant due to non-availability of raw water. The situation has recently reached a crisis to an extent that no supply of water is received from the network particularly in Ipelegeng.
Currently, supply of water to Ipelegeng Township and surroundings is through tankering and Schweizer-Reneke town is receiving water from boreholes connected to the network. A total number of eight trucks with the capacity of 1400 litres are supplying approximately twenty-eight Jojo tanks in the area. The repair and testing of all non-functional boreholes including drilling as well as equipping have been done. The Department of Water Services has completed the long outstanding connection point at the Wentzel dam so that the District Municipality’s appointed contractor can connect their newly completed pump station to it.
As the Department of Water Services is currently transporting water daily from Geysdorp near Delareyville to where the tankers are stationed, the District Municipality has also requested some assistance from Sedibeng Water and they have delivered 10 Jojo tanks to Mamusa to improve the distribution of water. The Local Municipality has announced water restrictions to the community. Only one water tank is currently without water at Ipelegeng Township, (Ward 8) due to vandalism that experienced.
